In this slim novel, Kawakami tells the ins and outs of the daily operation of a second-hand shop, and her stories are very gripping, I couldn’t put it down. The daily pickups, the meals together, the sex exploration of the young female protagonist, the quirky conversations among the coworkers and the owner, the exchanges with customers, the love relationship between the two young characters, the goodbye, the reunion,…. They all show the friendly relationship at the shop which is a total cultural difference between Japan and America. Kawakami’s minute details of the feelings and thoughts of her characters are very charming.
This novel is heartwarming, a feel-good book that you want to pick up whenever you need some light entertainment with words.
